Ulster sign Australia fly-half Lealiifano

Ulster have signed "proven leader" Australia fly-half Christian Lealiifano on a short-term deal.

The 29-year-old joins from the Brumbies on a five-month deal, which runs until the end of the Champions Cup pool stages in January, before returning to Australia for the start of the Super Rugby season.

Lealiifano, who won the last of his 19 caps for the Wallabies against England last year, returned to the sport in June after recovering from leukaemia.

"This is a massive boost for us as we approach the start of the season. It was paramount that we signed an experienced player to give us another option at fly-half and this is a fantastic solution for us," Ulster director of Rugby Les Kiss said.

"Christian has the playing talent, the leadership ability and the personality to make a big impact here.

"He has overcome significant challenges in his career and that is testament to his bravery and strong character."

Lealiifano praised the Brumbies for allowing him to make the short-term move to the Irish province.

"I'd like to thank the Brumbies for allowing me to do this stint abroad. I'm really excited to be joining up with Ulster Rugby and I'm looking forward to getting out there in front of the supporters at Kingspan Stadium," he said.

"I can't wait to experience the rugby and the culture in Belfast."

New Zealand-born Lealiifano, who is in his tenth year at the Brumbies, will replace Paddy Jackson in the Ulster first team.

Jackson, 25, and Ulster team-mate Stuart Olding, 24, are unavailable for selection while they face pending legal proceedings.

Ulster begin their Pro14 campaign against South African new boys the Cheetahs at Kingspan Stadium on Friday, 1 September.
