Unhappy Pique to quit Spain

Gerard Pique is to retire from international football after the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Pique is unpopular with some Spain fans for his support of independence for Catalonia and he was criticised for appearing to removing the national flag from his shirt for Sunday's 2-0 win in Albania.

The Barcelona defender cut his sleeves prior to the game with the Spanish Football Federation claiming he had done so for comfort, but fans took to social media to criticise the 29-year-old.

Following his latest run-in with fans, Pique has stated his intention to quit international football.

"I have tried everything, but I can't bear this anymore. Today's issue of the sleeves is the straw that breaks the camel," he said.

"They've managed to make me lose the excitement of coming here and although after Russia I'll only be 31, I'll leave."

Pique has been capped 84 times for Spain and won the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.
