Manchester United have triggered an extension clause in Marouane Fellaini's contract.
Fellaini agreed a four-year deal with the option of a further year when he joined from Everton in September 2013 and United have activated the clause.
The extension, which will tie the Belgium international to Old Trafford until the summer of 2018, comes at a time when his future at the club appeared to be uncertain.
The 29-year-old had struggled to secure a regular place in the United first team and was booed off by his own supporters last month after giving away a penalty in the 1-1 draw at Everton.
However, he is valued by Jose Mourinho and ran to the manager to celebrate after scoring his first goal of the season in the 2-0 win over Hull City in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final.
Speaking after the match, Mourinho paid tribute to the player by saying: "He has a very strong mentality and has coped well. He knows he is a very important player for me."
