US. Mexico and Canada to host 2026 World Cup

The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada after a joint bid gained two-thirds of the votes of delegates at the annual Fifa Congress in Moscow.

The joint bid garnered 134 of the 200 votes from delegates compared to just 65 votes for the only other challenger, Morocco. It is the fifth time the North Africa country has failed in a bid to host the tournament.

The Iranian delegate wrote "none of the above" and was the only spoilt vote in the ballot.

It is the second time that the United States have hosted the event - the only previous time was in 1994. Mexico has hosted the World Cup on two occasions - 1970 an 1986. Canada has never staged the global event.

The 2026 World Cup will be the biggest ever with 48 teams playing 80 matches over 34 days.

Sixty of those matches will be staged in United States with Mexico and Canada hosting ten each.

The final will be played at the 84,953-capacity MetLife Stadium, which is home to NFL sides the New York Giants and the New York Jets.

The US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said: "Football is the only victor. We are all united in football.

"Thank you so, so much for this incredible honour. Thank you for entrusting us with this privilege.

"We are humbled by the trust our colleagues in the Fifa family have put in our bid, strengthened by the unity between our three countries and the Concacaf region and excited by the opportunity we have to put football on a new and sustainable path for generations to come."

There will be 16 representatives from Europe, nine from Africa, eight from Asia and the Middle East, six from North and Central America, six from South America and one from Oceania. There will also be two play-off places available.

The World Cup host usually receives automatic entry into the tournament, but Fifa Council have yet to decide if all three host nations will be guaranteed a place in the finals.

The format of the finals will involve each team playing just two group-stage matches with the top two from each group advancing to a 32-team straight knock-out.
