Vettel quickest in first practice

Ferrari dominated the opening practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix with Sebastian Vettel topping the timesheets from his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.

Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton both went fastest earlier in the session but they dropped off the top when the Ferrari pair took the track, with Vettel producing a 1:23.951 lap to deny Raikkonen by 0.138 seconds.

Rosberg took third with reigning world champion Hamilton finishing the session in fourth ahead of Daniel Ricciardo in the first Red Bull.

Max Verstappen stepped in the Red Bull for the first time following his promotion from Toro Rosso and he impressed with the sixth-fastest time of the morning, as Valtteri Bottas took seventh for Williams.

His team-mate Felipe Massa was ninth just behind the Toro Rosso of Carlos Sainz Jr, with Fernando Alonso completing the top ten in his McLaren.

Daniil Kvyat was 12th fastest on his return to Toro Rosso.
