Aston Villa expect to complete the signing of Ireland international Glenn Whelan from Stoke City "in another couple of weeks".
The 81-times capped midfielder, who has been at the Bet 365 Stadium for nine-and-a-half seasons and played 30 times in the Premier League last campaign, is set to leave the club following their free transfer signing of Darren Fletcher from West Brom.
Stoke have already rejected a bid of £500,000 for the Dubliner, who has one-year left on his Potters deal, but Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness says the Championship club will come back with a revised offer.
"People are in different parts of the world just now so that one could take another couple of weeks," he said.
Villa manager Steve Bruce says Whelan will add a fighting spirit to a team that finished 13th in the Championship last season.
"I think we need to have a little bit more steel and determination and aggression, especially in the Championship. I have left that with the powers that be so that could be the next one hopefully," he said.
Whelan started his career in England with Manchester City, and joined Stoke from Sheffield Wednesday in a £500,000 deal on January 2008 deadline day.
