Wales v Ireland to be held at Cardiff City Stadium

Ireland's World Cup qualifier against Wales in October will be held at the 33,280-capacity Cardiff City Stadium.

Chris Coleman's Wales squad prefer playing at the Cardiff City Stadium rather than the far larger Principality Stadium, which holds 74,500 people.

Wales had block-booked Cardiff's ground for their Group D qualifiers, apart from the final match against the Irish on 9 October.

The Football Association of Ireland wanted the game to be played at the Principality Stadium, the home of Welsh rugby that was formerly known as the Millennium Stadium.

The FAI would have hoped for an away allocation of around 7,000 tickets if the match had been played at the Principality Stadium, but may now only receive the Uefa-mandated five percent minimum of 1664 tickets.

Wales trail Group D leaders Serbia and Ireland by four points with four group games remaining. They host Austria at Cardiff City Stadium on 2 September before away games in Moldova and Georgia.
