Walters claims senior prize

Jonathan Walters has been named Senior International Player of the Year at the 2016 Three FAI International Awards.

The Stoke striker played a key role in the Republic of Ireland's qualification campaign for 2016, missing just one match through the suspension. He scored five goals, including a brace against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the play-offs.

He beat Robbie Brady and Wes Hoolahan to the prize and he believes the Boys in Green can do well in France this summer.

"If you look back at qualification, people wrote us off early on. During the group there were other teams saying that there were only three teams in it," Walters said.

"Teams write us off at their peril and it’ll be the same again in (France). In this group we’re the underdogs against three very good teams and I'm sure they’ll already write us off."

Shane Long picked up the International Goal of the Year for his strike against Germany, while there was some consolation for Brady as he was named Young International Player of the Year.

Richie Towell was the winner of the SSE Airtricity League Player of the Year with Denise O'Sullivan crowned Senior Women's International Player of the Year.
