Ireland forward Jon Walters will be out of action "for weeks, not days' because of a recurring knee problem.
The Burnley striker, who missed Ireland's recent World Cup qualifier wins over Moldova and Wales with the injury, has already undergone two clean-up operations on his knee over the past 18 months, in March 2016 and in January 2017.
And eir Sport understand that the 34-year-old will definitely miss Ireland's World Cup play-offs in November as he continues his rehabilitation at Burnley.
Ireland qualified for the World Cup play-offs with a 1-0 win over Wales in Cardiff on Monday, and will meet one of Italy, Denmark, Croatia or Switzerland in November's World Cup play-off.
"[Clarets' manager] Sean Dyche doesn't usually comment on injury timeframes because he prefers not to put pressure on the player to come back on a set date," a Burnley spokesman told eir Sport.
"But Sean has said before that he expects Jon to be out for weeks and not days."
The Liverpool-born forward joined Burnley in a £3m deal in July, signing a two-year deal at Turf Moor after seven seasons at Stoke City.
However, he has only played 27 minutes of Premier League football this season, and has not be in action at all since Ireland's 1-1 World Cup Qualifier draw in Tbilisi on 2 September.
