Danny Welbeck has undergone surgery to his right knee and will be sidelined for up to nine months, Arsenal have confirmed.
Welbeck was injured during the first half of Arsenal's 2-2 draw at Manchester City on Sunday after colliding with Bacary Sagna.
At the time it was thought he was facing up to three months out, but scans revealed he suffered significant cartilage damage and specialists determined surgery was required to treat the problem.
His recovery is expected to take up to nine months, ruling him out of Euro 2016 as well as the first half of the 2016-17 season.
"Everyone at Arsenal will be working hard with Danny throughout his recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch as soon as possible," a statement from Arsenal read.
