Wenger denies Arsenal are 'panic buying'

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists the £52m signings of Lucas Perez and Shkodran Mustafi are not "panic buys".

Arsenal are on the verge of signing £17.1m forward Perez from Deportivo La Coruna, and £35m Valencia centre-back Shkodran Mustafi, with the transfers expected to go through on Monday following their medicals on Friday .

Wenger insists that the signing of 27-year-old Perez, who scored 17 league goals last season but has never been capped by Spain, was not borne out of desperation.

"Look at my face. Am I the face of somebody who does a panic buy?" Wenger told reporters.

"He's a late developer because he played in a different position. He moved centrally and in a successful way.

"So I think he has good linkup qualities, good quality of receptions, good finishing qualities. But let's see if we can finish the job.

The Frenchman says that Valencia are playing hardball over Mustafi deal, knowing that English clubs have more money than ever to spend following the lucrative TV deal signed with Sky and BT Sport last year.

"When a [foreign] club wants to sell to an English club today they ask for a huge amount of money. So it takes a long time to settle [on a price]. In the next two or three days everybody will find agreements," he said.

"[Mustafi] was their captain. If we get it done, we get what we wanted."

Wenger says he thought that Arsenal would complete their transfer business earlier in the summer, but were thwarted by the Euros and the reluctance of selling clubs to negotiate at the start of the transfer window.

"This season I thought we had the most easy transfer window ever because we knew what we wanted and who we wanted and it didn't come off, so you have to restart," he added.

"When you restart, when you handle some leagues they are [on] holiday, there was the European Championships and nothing happened, you couldn't find anybody.
