Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has praised the quality of his bench after Alex Iwobi came off the bench to score the clincher in the Gunners 3-1 win over Stoke to send them top of the Premier League.
Iwobi started the season as a first-team regular, but has since been displaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the starting side, to fill the role of superb sub, grabbing his second goal in as many matches today.
Speaking post-match, Wenger said: “I have top quality on the bench – there is not one player you can question on the bench today.
“The third goal gave us a cushion, and then it was more comfortable, from then on Stoke were a bit more resigned to the game.
“I have Lucas Perez, who scored three against Basel, who didn’t even come on today.”
However, Wenger was keen to downplay his side’s position at the summit of the Premier League, especially with Chelsea yet to play this weekend, and due to return to top spot should they overcome West Brom at home tomorrow.
“It (our league position) means we are there for the fight, and that we’ve been consistent after the first games that have been very difficult,” continued Wenger.
“It is up to us to maintain our focus, to continue to improve, there are areas we can still do better. That’s where our future lies. I think we have a chance to fight at the top.”
