West Ham sign Javier Hernandez

West Ham have completed the £16m signing of former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez from Bayer Leverkusen.

The Mexico international has signed a three-year contract with the Premier League club, on a reported £140,000-a-week salary.

"Chicharito" scored 59 goals in 157 appearances for United between 2010 and 2014, and, after a season-long loan at Real Madrid, signed a permanent deal with Leverkusen, where he netted 39 goals in 76 games.

Hernandez is set to make his Hammers debut against his former side Manchester United on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

"I am very happy to join West Ham United," Hernandez told the club's website.

"For me, the Premier League is the best league in the world and when the opportunity came, I was desperate to sign for this club.

"It was not a difficult decision. West Ham is an historic club, and very ambitious – this summer you can see with the players signed that they are looking to have a very good season."

Hernandez, who won two Premier League titles with Manchester United, says he is delighted to return to England after a year in Madrid and two years in Leverkusen.

"I've had three fantastic years playing in Spain and Germany, but England was really the first big chapter in my career and I am so happy to be back," he continued.

"I am desperate for the season to start and to help the team achieve all their objectives."

The 29-year-old becomes the Hammers' fourth major signing of the summer, following Argentine defender Pablo Zabaleta, on-loan goalkeeper Joe Hart and Austria international Marko Arnautovic to the London Stadium.

"He has a proven goalscoring record in the Premier League, La Liga and the Bundesliga, as well in the UEFA Champions League and at international level with Mexico," Hammers' co-chairman David Sullivan said.

"We now have some fantastic options in attacking positions and, like all West Ham fans, I am looking forward to seeing Javier score goals in a claret and blue shirt next season."
