West Ham sign Zaza on loan

West Ham have signed Simone Zaza on an initial year-long loan from Juventus.

The Hammers will pay the Italian champions £5m for the initial season-long loan, and will pay a further £20m fee to make the deal permanent should the 25-year-old play a certain amount of games.

Zaza has already played and scored in the new London Stadium, as he was part of the Juve team that beat West Ham 3-2 in the official opening game on 7 August.

“I want to thank everyone for welcoming me including the fans and everyone at the club. I wanted to start a new experience and I feel this is the right choice for me," Zaza said.

"I have been fortunate enough to have already played at the new stadium with a different shirt. It is a beautiful stadium and I felt the warmth of the fans and this was a big reason why I wanted to join the club.

"I want to become a better player and I know I can do that at West Ham. Unfortunately we could not qualify for the Europa League, but I am hoping I can help the club do that next season."

Zaza says he his looking forward to following in the footsteps of Paolo di Canio, who a West Ham crowd favourite between 1999 and 2003.

"I am keeping my feet on the ground, because I know how important he is for this club. I also know he is in love with West Ham and that’s another reason why I decided to come here," he continued.

"I can’t say we are similar players, because he was better! But I watched him talk about his experiences at West Ham and am truly curious to see what he meant."

Zaza joined Juventus from Sassuolo last summer in a €18m deal, scoring five goals in 19 Serie A appearances for the Italian champions

He was also in the Italy squad which reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2016, but missed a penalty in the shoot-out against Germany.

West Ham have already completed the £5.5m signing of Swiss midfielder Edimilson Fernandes from FC Sion this week.

The 20-year-old, a cousin of former Manchester City midfielder Gelson Fernandes, signed a four-year deal at the London Stadium on Thursday.
