Wexford should "settle on one free-taker" after Tipp loss

Wexford have been urged to settle on having one free-taker after Tipperary's Jason Forde grabbed a match-winning 2-9 to give the Premier County a hard-fought 3-21 1-21 win in Allianz Hurling League Division 1A.

The Silvermines forward notched eight points from frees and speaking on eir Sport's Match Night Live, six-time Tipperary All Star Eoin Kelly expressed his view that Davy Fitzgerald needs the same return from his set-piece specialist.

“It’s an inconsistency with Wexford and we saw it again last year in the Championship," he said. "All winning teams have a nine out of 10 free-taker, you need to be scoring the majority of your frees.

“You see Jason Forde, he finished with 2-9 tonight, eight points from frees I think he got eight out of 10 frees tonight – that’s the level you have to be at.

“It’s just when the pressure is on and Lee Chin is driving forward and next thing you win a free and you’re hoping to get a score from the resulting free and it goes wide. It just deflates the whole team and they haven’t got it right in the last 12 months.

“Jack Guiney’s another guy who we haven’t mentioned that sometimes hits the frees, they need to settle on one free-taker. If you’re chopping and changing it can bring down the confidence of that free-taker so settle on one guy and just stick with him.”
