Georginio Wijnaldum believes Liverpool deserve to end a 'wonderful' season with the Champions League trophy.
Jurgen Klopp's men came agonisingly close to ending their 29-year wait for the league title as they finished just a single point behind Manchester City in the Premier League, but they have the opportunity to end the season on a high by claiming Europe's top prize.
The Reds face Premier League rivals Tottenham in the Champions League final in Madrid on Saturday, 1 June and Wijnaldum hopes they can return to Anfield with the trophy.
“Overall, I think we had a good season and now is the challenge to finish with a title to make the season complete,” he told the club's official website.
“It would be really sad if we finish the season without a title, especially because I think we were quite consistent this season and we did so good. I think this season deserves one.
“It would be really special, especially because this season deserves an end like that. We’re going to do everything to bring it to that end, but it’s going to be tough.”
Wijnaldum has made 46 appearances for Liverpool this season and his brace against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final second leg helped them claim a memorable 4-3 win on aggregate and he is pleased that the final is in their hands.
"The last couple of games were basically games where we could only win and look at what City were doing. They won also. Fair enough, they are champions," he explained.
"Now we have a game that we can control, so we have to bring that to a good end. But it's going to be tough."
