Williams withdraws from WTA Finals

Serena Williams has withdrawn from the season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore through injury.

Williams has not played since the semi-finals of the US Open in September, withdrawing from tournaments in Wuhan and Beijing in order to work on his fitness ahead of the WTA Finals.

However, she has failed in her quest to recover in time for the Singapore tournament.

"I am really, really bombed that I won't be able to compete. It has been a really tough year for me, just dealing with my shoulder injury," Williams explained.

"My doctor insists that I stay home at heal it every single day so I can have a chance to play next year."

The top eight players qualify automatically for the WTA Finals and Williams' place in the field could be taken by British number one Johanna Konta, providing she is not overtaken in the rankings by either Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro or Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Williams' withdrawal means Australian and US Open champion Angelique Kerber will end the year as world number one.

Conor McGregor will fight Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight belt at UFC 205 in New York on November 12 live on the eir Sport pack. The eir Sport pack is free to all eir broadband customers. To learn more about setting sport free visit www.eir.ie/sport .
