Wings flies to Dante glory

Wings Of Desire underlined his Investec Derby credentials by winning the Betfred Dante Stakes at York on Thursday.

Frankie Dettori had the option of riding stablemate Foundation but opted for the recent Wolverhampton winner and it proved to be the correct decision as he came home by a neck.

Deauville moved two lengths clear of the field shortly after being sent into the lead with two furlongs to run, but Dettori was wise to the move and brought his mount with a well timed run to get the better of Ryan Moore's mount close to the line.

"Everybody kept on knocking him. I knew this horse could be anything and we proved it today. And I think if he goes further he'll be even better," Dettori said.

"I took a pull early in the straight because he's very raw and when he hits the front he's mentally immature so I wanted to use Ryan (Moore, on Deauville) as a target.

"When I asked him to quicken he gave it to me and we won.

"He can only improve, it was only his third day at school, and we know there's plenty more to come, so we will roll the dice (supplement for Epsom) and give it a go."

Foundation took third, a length and a half back, while Midterm failed to justify favouritism after fading away to finish fifth.
