Wolves shock Liverpool in FA Cup

Jurgen Klopp's side suffer third Anfield defeat in seven days

Wolves are the first side in the hat for Monday's FA Cup fifth-round draw after shocking Premier League high-fliers Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield on Saturday.

Paul Lambert's side, 18th in the Championship, produced a performance of real quality and maturity to book their place in the fifth round for the first time in nine years.

But it was another home horror show for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, who slumped to their third defeat at Anfield in seven days following last Saturday's Premier League reverse to Swansea and the EFL Cup loss to Southampton on Wednesday.

Wolves stunned the Kop with the opening goal after just 52 seconds, as centre-half Richard Stearman ghosted off his marker to head Wander Helder Costa's angled free-kick towards the far post beyond Liverpool goalkeeper Lloris Karius.

It was the 29-year-old's first goal in any competition since April 2014, 1013 days ago, when he scored a header against Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road that secured the League One title for Wolves.

Costa, who almost netted a second for Wolves in the tenth minute following a run from his own half, added his second assist of the afternoon just before the break, when he held off an Alberto Moreno challenge to send in Andreas Weimann, who rounded Karius and slammed the ball into an empty net.

Liverpool, booed off by their own fans at half-time, improved after the break and finally managed a shot on target on the hour mark, though substitute Philippe Coutinho's side-footed wffort was easily saved by Wolves goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne.

And they finally netted in the 86th minute, when Divick Origi netted his first goal in 10 matches with an emphatic finish at the far post from Dubliner Matt Doherty's poor clearance.

Burgoyne, for so long a spectator, then produced an instinctive block with his feet to deny the Belgian seconds later, and Wolves held on through four minutes of injury time to secure a famous victory.
