Tiger Woods has confirmed that his ongoing battle to regain full fitness means he will not play in next week's US Masters.
The four-time champion has not played since withdrawing from the Dubai Desert Classic in February due to continuing back problems.
The 14-time major champion won the last of the game's biggest prizes at the US Open in 2008 and has since seen his career spiral owing to first personal troubles and then to a series of injuries.
Woods has had surgery on his knee and multiple times on his back and unfortunately for him, he has been unable to play any regular golf in the last couple of years.
Speculation was rife that the American would attempt to tee up at Augusta next Thursday on the 20th anniversary of his first major victory in the event but unsurprisingly he has admitted defeat in his efforts.
"My back rehabilitation didn't allow me the time to get tournament ready," a statement on his personal website read. "I'm especially upset because it's a special anniversary for me that's filled with a lot of great memories.
"I have no timetable for my return, but I will continue my diligent effort to recover, and want to get back out there as soon as possible."
After almost 18 months out, Woods returned to the tour last December but he missed the cut at the Farmers Open in January before his back problem flared up again in Dubai.
