The Italian Rugby Federation [FIR] have confirmed that cash-strapped Zebre intend to withdraw from the Pro 12.
Zebre president Stefano Pagliarini called a press conference in January to confirm that the club needed €1m to finish the season, and the financial situation has failed to improve in the subsequent six months.
The club has now been dissolved and ownership of the name has reverted to the FIR, who are likely to invite offers to set up a new franchise, most likely in Rome or Calvisano in northern Italy.
FIR have confirmed they will fulfil their agreement with Celtic Rugby Board to provide two teams in the competition, and will meet in Parma on Monday to discuss the situation with Zebre's players and staff.
The Italian club have lost all 16 of their Heineken or Champions Cup games since their formation as a professional Pro 12 side in 2012.
Two South African sides, the Cheetahs and Southern Kings, are expected to take their place in a restructured 14-team Pro 14 this season.
